Get Support
Whether you choose to make a formal report or not, you are able to access support.
We are here to support you
We know it can be incredibly difficult to disclose if you have been raped, sexually assaulted, harassed or abused. We understand there are many barriers and that you will be experiencing difficult feelings, some of which may be worries about how you will be treated if you do make a disclosure. This is a distressing time for you, and it is of the utmost importance to us that we don’t make it any more difficult. We encourage you to come forward safe in the knowledge that you will be believed, respected and supported.
If you have experienced harassment, hate or gender based or sexual violence, the RVC will:
1. Empower you to report under formal RVC procedures or to the police (if that’s what you want to do)
2. Take disclosures seriously, you will be believed and treated with dignity and respect
3. Act in a timely, sensitive and discrete manner to any reports received
4. Support you to access specialist help and support
5. Respond to disclosures in a way that supports any potential criminal investigation
6. Take all precautionary actions needed to ensure your safety and the safety and wellbeing of any students involved
RVC Advice Centre
To get support and discuss all possible next steps or if you are not sure what has happened to you, and how it might be viewed (e.g. have I been sexually assaulted?) you can speak to a member of the Advice Centre team.
Contact us on 020 8051 3500 or email advice@rvc.ac.uk and one of the team will get back to you as soon as possible. You can also book an appointment with a Student Wellbeing Adviser to discuss the matter in confidence.
A Student Wellbeing Adviser can discuss reporting options with you in more detail, provide emotional and mental health support, help you to access external specialist support where appropriate and liaise with staff about any academic adjustments that you may need if your studies have been affected.
We will respect your right to decide what course of action you wish to take and will not take any action or pass on information without your consent. The only exceptions to this is where:
· It is considered an emergency situation and there is a risk of imminent harm to self or others
· There are safeguarding implications (report involves people under 18 or vulnerable adults)
Prefer to request support online? You can make an anonymous report or request to speak to an advisor using our online tool Report + Support.
Any students submitting non-anonymous reports through RVC Report and Support will be contacted by the Advice Centre who will offer support as outlined above.
Please note: If you are at immediate risk of harm or are in need of urgent medical attention, please contact emergency services on 999. If you are on campus you should also contact the College Security Team on 020 7468 5121 (Camden) or 01707 66 6258 (Hawkshead).
