Ali is a member of the Reproduction Research Group. His research is based on oocyte biology and embryology of domesticated and farm animal species and uterine embryo interaction and mechanism of embryo implantation.

Ali trained as a Veterinarian in Tehran University and served for about 7 years as a Lecturer in Animal Reproduction before moving to the United Kingdom for further education. He gained his MSc in 1995 and PhD in 1999 from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Ali undertook at PhD at the Roslin Institute where he worked alongside Professor Keith Campbell, creator of Dolly the cloned sheep from differentiated cells. Following this he moved on to undertake post-doctoral work at the University of Manchester, investigating the role of Leukaemia Inhibitory Factor with Sue Kimber. Subsequently he joined Nottingham University as a Research Fellow working with Professor Bob Webb to investigate the effects of diet on oocyte & embryo quality in lactating dairy cows.

In June 2006, Ali accepted a Lectureship position at the Royal Veterinary College (Department of Veterinary Basic Sciences). His research in the area of female reproduction continues. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer position in 2012 and then to Reader position in September 2016.

During his time at the Roslin Institute Ali's studies established that improvement in cytoplasmic maturation of bovine oocytes improves the rate of blastocyst development (Fouladi-Nashta et al., 1998, Biology of Reproduction 59: 255-262).

At the University of Manchester Ali investigated the role of leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) on implantation of embryos in mice. Using LIF gene knocked-out mice he showed misregulation of signalling mechanisms and absence of changes in the uterine endometrium associated uterine receptivity (Fouladi-Nashta et al., 2005, Developmental Biology, 281:1-21) resulting in infertility. They also demonstrated that LIF inhibitor can effectively inhibit its effects on decidualisation of uterine stroma cells (Fouladi-Nashta et al., 2004, Journal of Endocrinology, 181: 477-492).

Whilst at Nottingham University Ali investigated the effects of diet on oocyte and embryo quality in lactating dairy cows. Diets can modify the profiles of hormones and local production of growth factors thereby influencing reproductive function (Fouladi-Nashta et al., 2007, Biology of Reproduction 77: 9-17). He developed diets which can promote reproductive cyclicity and also increase pregnancy rate in post-calving dairy cows (Garnsworthy et al., 2008). He also developed a simple and fast but reliable technique for assessment of blastocysts (Reproductive BioMedicine Online, 2005, 10: 497-502).

Since joining the RVC  in 2006, I have supervised 15 PhD students, all of whom have successfully completed their projects within 3 to 4 years of registration. In addition, I supervised 4 Post-Doctoral (Post-Doc) fellows over the years of working at the RVC.

  • Currently, I am supervising 2 PhD students at the RVC, and I am a co-supervisor for one PhD student started recently in Thailand.
