The
Initial Problem
We have had a five-year-old male crossbred dog whose
problems started when he was three.
The problem started in June and was pruritic. During
the winter the problem went into remission only to recur in June
the following year.
Initially it responded well to steroids (assume we have
now checked on this with the previous vet) but when it recurred
it didn't respond so well and a rash appeared.
What do you think is going on here?
The response to steroids indicates that the condition is inflammatory
and suggests strongly that it is an allergy. The common
allergies of dogs are: flea bite allergy (quite common), atopy
(quite common) and food allergy (uncommon). Contact allergy
is rare although often misdiagnosed.
