The RVC enjoys a prestigious reputation throughout the world, and the expertise of our staff is internationally recognised. We received the maximum score of 24 out of 24 in an assessment of teaching standards by the Quality Assurance Agency in 2003. The veterinary medicine degree is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and the RVC was the first UK veterinary school to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Our graduates benefit from the ability to practice throughout both the UK and the USA, and further afield. The accreditation of the BSc Bioveterinary Science course by the Society of Biology has recognised the valuable skills and experiences these students go onto offer to employers within the science sector. Further details are available from the Society of Biology.

The RVC is committed to creating employable graduates that meet the needs of the veterinary sector and beyond. Our commitment to creating leaders of the future does not stop at helping our graduates into employment; We recognise that finding the right role, offering professional development and job satisfaction, is just as important for all our graduates and their employers. So, whether you are an alumnus of the RVC who appreciates the opportunity to maintain this link with the RVC and is well aware of the capabilities and skills of our graduates, or an employer who is learning about us for the first time, thank you!

A lot of our graduates and specialist postgraduates are interested in veterinary practice including companion, equine, exotic and farm roles but some seek alternative options. Such other areas can include roles involving work with animals, animal charities, related government agencies, veterinary pathology, veterinary practice management and zoo-keeping. Additionally, scientific roles in industry, academia and publishing are often of interest.

If you have any questions about the vacancy promotion process, or would like to engage our students/graduates further, please contact the RVC Careers Service.

Small Animal Vet

Barn Lodge Vets, Lancashire

Does a position as Small Animal Vet in an Independent, Family-Run practice with Hospital facilities and toys sound like the dream?

We think so! For new grads, we offer support in-practice with VetGDP mentor and from XLVets new grad programme and alongside a 2021 grad who has walked the same path for those beginning their career, together with encouragement to take your own independent steps and manage your own caseload with advice when you need it.

And for those further along in their career then the space, equipment and investment to reach out to their next steps and responsibilities.

Ormskirk, Lancashire is the place I’ve called home for 26 years. May have a funny name but we’re in the sweetest spot with a fantastic local community, and surrounded by beautiful countryside, whilst Liverpool and Manchester are only 30/50minutes away respectively.   Our ambition, as a family, is to create a working environment for us all to take pride in and the Hospital status of our central hub is really important to us; but we remain a very close team, this certainly isn’t a huge team where you could get lost or forgotten – We’re small enough to care but big enough to cope! We have three radial practices, one is a typical GP centre and two are just for outreach consults in local communities – you’ll get the idea when we tour you round! We tend to start everyone off at the Hospital within the team, and then explore other spots just when you’re ready.

Our typical 40 hour week has no Out-Of-Hours, and only 1 in 5 Saturdays (9-3) as we value focussed working hours and then ability to enjoy decent breaks and time off around our home here. We pay for subscriptions, generous CPD budget, all the things you’d expect from a practice that wants to do right by its staff, clients, and patients together. If we think cases need additional expertise, we have some visiting consultants as well as support from an excellent local referral centre, and they actively encourage us to follow interesting cases along too. We do keep a fair number of bells and whistles to hand in the practice too – DR and dental xray, sparkling ultrasound, ortho kit, Laparoscopy arriving this autumn – everything we need to make doing a good job easy, we have here to hand.

Salary-wise, our new grads start at £33,000, and salaries rise to £65,000 for advanced expertise clinicians. Private medical insurance, and even your birthday off too!

If you’d like to have a chat about our practice, why we think it’s special, and to see if you agree, then message me / email Jsk@barnlodgevets.co.uk or phone 07845802108 and see if you’d like to come and visit the team.

Best wishes,

Mr Joel Kirwan BA (Hons)

Graduate Clinician Plan

What’s that, I hear you say? An Independent Small Animal Hospital are introducing a New Graduate Clinician Plan? With a set induction program designed to boost the confidence of new and recent graduates, or for those joining first opinion small animal practice after a break? Sign me up!

At the Veterinary Hospital in Lincoln we are recruiting a new member of the team to embark on our Graduate Clinician Plan. This started in 2022 and is already proving to offer a valuable, supported role to our newly qualified vets. As a large independent hospital we have a varied team with a wealth of experience, and are well practiced in supporting new members of the profession – we want you to join us!

We are offering the following:

• Two year contract with a view to permanency if mutually agreeable

• Average 40 hours per week, based over 4 week-days in the clinic each week, plus 1 in 4 Saturday mornings 9-1, eventually joining the 1 in 9 on call rota for inpatient care only.

o Shifts vary on a rota pattern which overlap to cover our opening hours, 8-5, 9-5, 9-6, 10- 7(on call).

• Basic salary:

o £32k year one, £36k year two

o Plus excellent perks: Income protection, BUPA healthcare, topped up company pension, BVA, RCVS, VDS fees paid, uniform, cost price veterinary treatment for your own animals, extensive internal and external CPD and support.

o 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays each year (or time in lieu)

• Dedicated, protected time each week with your in house VetGDP advisor to support you in your professional development.

• Comprehensive CPD plan to support you through the VetGDP process:

o External CPD:

▪ Tickets to the London Vet Show in year one,

▪ Enrollment on the Grads to Vets Scheme ran by the BVA in year one – this includes 4 dedicated external CPD days, peer support network with monthly case discussion groups, and an external recent graduate mentor, as well as your in house VetGDP advisor.

▪ £1000+ CPD budget for year two to spend on courses fulfilling your own interest areas

o In house CPD from our experienced team in: exotics, surgery, internal medicine, ECC, cardiology, behaviour, communication skills and imaging.

Learn from a team of vets, nurses and front of house staff who have a wealth of experience and extensive patience!

Treat (mostly) lovely patients and interact with our (mostly) genuinely lovely clients – from a wide breadth of society, some insured, some not – practice how it is possible to tailor your treatment to serve the pet’s clinical need within the clients’ means - essential for first opinion practice in 2023.

Have a gradual introduction to out of hours care for our inpatients (we use VetsNow for emergencies, but keep care in house for inpatients and those who have recently had surgery on site for best case continuity).

Don’t let your first year out be terrifying – join up to a supportive practice who want to keep you for the long term!

Want to know more....? Visit www.vhvets.co.uk We are an independent 12 vet, 2 site practice with a large purpose built hospital and a new, smaller clinic equipped for consults and routine surgery, based in the heart of the cathedral city of Lincoln. More details on the role:

George Farm Vets New Graduate Opportunity 2024

The George Veterinary Group is a large, independent practice providing farm animal veterinary services across Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. We are a progressive and enthusiastic team who strive to provide an exemplary service to our farmers at all times. Our team holds itself to core values of Respect, Trust and Integrity, and we endeavor to be a practice where great people chose to work, and can thrive.

We understand the demands being placed on our farmers, navigating public perception and regulation changes while adapting their businesses for a sustainable future. We are looking to recruit open-minded individuals who want to be an active part of the on-farm advisory team, providing support and guidance to farmers on their business as a whole.

Sustainability is a real focus for us, both in the workplace and in supporting our farmers. The George Vet Group ‘Sustainability Group’ constantly reviews the environmental impact of the whole practice and how this can be improved. We have a ‘Sustainable Farming’ discussion group which focusses on regenerative agriculture.

We have much to offer new graduates; high quality dairy and beef cattle work, beautiful countryside to work in and proactive, engaged clients. We promote and prioritise clinical excellence and have a strong emphasis on preventative medicine, herd health and productivity. We run a busy calender of farmer discussion meetings and enjoy attending agricultural shows and events. We host regular charity evenings and pride ourselves in being part of the local farming community.

We run a well-supported and rewarding new graduate programme that produces confident and competent young vets. All new graduates will have a named mentor for clinical support and we aim to meet with you on a monthly basis to discuss any current issues and agree goals going forward. We run weekly tutorials with specific vets to cover common procedures and discuss cases.

Your working hours will be 8.30am until 5.30pm, with a half day every week and a half day following a weekend on call. You will be on call one weeknight per week and 1 in 4 weekends.  Whilst on call you will be backed up by two other experienced vets who will screen the calls and support you as needed. The aim of this is to allow you to have maximum exposure to emergency calls while always having back up.

A typical week for you would include sick animal calls, disbudding and castrating and accompanying colleagues on surgeries or emergencies. You will have fortnightly scanning practice on one of our larger dairies (with experienced vet supervision and coaching). We have six TB testers and all of us do our fair share of TB testing. We believe TB testing is an opportunity, particularly for newly qualified vets; its gets you out on farm and helps you build client relationships whilst seeing a variety of different farming systems.

Our team is made up of multiple certificate and diploma holders and we very much encourage vets to develop specific interests and niches. We see value in having a team of ‘specialists’, where we can refer cases in house. We will always support someone who has skills they want to advance. Within our team we have vets with specific interest in embryo work, mastitis, lameness, sheep medicine, sustainable parasite control, grazing management and more! In addition to this we encourage our team members to develop their wider skills such as communication, emotional intelligence and resilience. We run an annual calender of in house non-clinical CPD and ensure our new graduates have access to external CPD on these topics.

We provide a car, phone, laptop and your RCVS fees will be covered. We have several VetGDP advisors and will fully support you through completion of your vet GDP during your first year in practice.

As a team we enjoy a range of sports from cycling, running, climbing, kayaking, surfing and banger racing. We socialise together as much as we can, drinks in the pub post work and team nights out  where possible.

Don’t take our word for it, here are some quotes from recent employees:

Elina Body, new graduate 2022-2023 “Starting as a new grad at the George has allowed me to grow and challenge myself while being supported by a friendly, knowledgeable and experienced team – I’ve been able to get to grips with the basics via planned tutorial and regular catch ups with my mentor plus given opportunities to further my own interests”.

Jonah Dickie, new graduate 2022-2023 ‘’The New Graduate Programme was the perfect start to my career as a farm vet. The programme provided a personalised level of support; allowing me to get out on calls from the start with the reassurance that there was always someone to help, either in person or over the phone. Fortnightly fertility scanning, frequent tutorials and an additional vet on call with me throughout the year allowed me to build confidence and gain experience quickly while never feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of my first year in practice.’’

The Pirbright Institute Internship 2024

Ref: 2024/09

Internship: A bivalent vaccine to reduce the risk of Nipah virus outbreaks

Supervisor: Prof Simon Graham https://www.pirbright.ac.uk/users/prof-simon-graham

Research group: Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) Immunology https://www.pirbright.ac.uk/our-science/porcine-reproductive-and-respiratory-syndrome-prrs-immunology

About The Pirbright Institute
The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. We study viruses of livestock that are endemic and exotic to the UK, including zoonotic viruses, by using the most advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our Institute is made up of a dynamic and vibrant community of employees covering a diverse set of chosen fields, backgrounds and experience. Our outlook is always balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours, and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one Institute’ approach.

Project Summary:

Pig-to-human transmission was responsible for the most severe Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak, which was controlled by culling almost half the Malaysian pig population. Despite the threat NiV poses, no vaccines are available. Commercial development of NiV vaccines is limited since companies fear limited marketability due to the sporadic nature of outbreaks. To address this gap, we are developing a bivalent vaccine for pigs.
Live attenuated pseudorabies virus (PrV) vaccines are highly effective vaccines that can be engineered to express antigens from other pathogens. We constructed a PrV vaccine that produced both the NiV F and G glycoproteins in a soluble form. The NiV-neutralising antibody response stimulated by prime-boost vaccination was comparable to those seen with protective vaccine candidates. The inclusion of the NiV proteins into the PrV vaccine did not hinder PrV-specific immune responses. Overall, the data suggested that the bivalent PrV-NiV vaccine candidate would likely provide protection against both viruses. However, the immune responses suggest that two doses may be require.
We now aim to improve the vaccine so that it may provide protection after a single immunisation. We shall do this by engineering the NiV glycoproteins so that they are expressed on the surface of cells, which should enhance antibody responses. We will compare the new and original vaccine to determine whether we have improved immunogenicity. The best candidate will then be tested for its ability to protect pigs against both PrV and NiV. Current PrV vaccines need to be kept refrigerated, which can be challenging in the tropical region at risk from NiV. Therefore, we will evaluate stabilising the vaccine by fine coating it with silica. Since NiV infection restricts the ability of countries to trade pigs or pig products, it is essential that any NiV vaccine has a companion test that enable the discrimination of infected from vaccinated pigs. We have established a lab-based assay that allows such discrimination and will translate this to a rapid ‘penside’ test.

Further Details:
The intern will join the project team at Pirbright and work alongside a post-doctoral scientist. The intern will be involved in two vaccine studies, the first will determine whether PrV expressing membrane-bound NiV glycoproteins is more immunogenic than the vector expressing soluble NiV glycoproteins, and the second will determine whether the most immunogenic PrV-NiV vaccine candidate provides protection against pseudorabies that is comparable to the gold standard PrV Bartha K61 vaccine. The intern will additionally provide some support to activities relating to the development of a companion DIVA lateral flow test and the evaluation of the stabilisation of the PrV-NiV vaccine by ensilication.
The intern will be trained in a range of immunological and virological techniques and gain experience of participating in vivo studies and working in a high biocontainment environment. They will also gain valuable experience of working as part of a larger international translational research project team involving academic and commercial partners (FLI-Germany, Global Access Diagnostics, EnsiliTech and BioVacc Consulting). The intern will be embedded in PRRS Immunology group and will be provided with additional support by other students and staff members.

Stowe Veterinary Group – Graduate Programme

Stowe Veterinary Group – Graduate Programme

Now recruiting for 2024

Exciting opportunities in Small Animal, Equine and Mixed practice.

Stowe Veterinary Group is an independent group of practices that comprises three surgical veterinary centres based in Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, with small animal practices in Needham Market and Elmswell.

We are seeking an enthusiastic new graduate small animal veterinary surgeon to strengthen our friendly team.

The practice is equipped with the latest equipment and offers a full array of modern diagnostic facilities, including laboratory tests, ultrasound, X-ray, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy.

The position would suit new graduates looking for a modern practice with long-term future prospects. Excellent remuneration, support with professional development and flexible shift patterns will be provided.

To apply for one of the positions within our group, please send your CV and a cover letter to Jacqui Garrett, HR Manager, at recruit@stowevets.co.uk

For more information, please take a look at our ’Graduate Programme’ brochure stowevets.co.uk/svggrad/

Volunteer Program at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre 2024

We have recently restarted our volunteer program and are currently targeting Vet students all over the world as they can work with our local specialised vet, Doctor Peter Rogers, whom has been working with HESC for around 30 years.

At HESC we specialize in cheetah rehabilitation and breeding.

We also focus on rescuing rhinos, whether it is calves that need raising after their mothers have been poached, or adult rhinos that need the right care and or medication.

We also house various sanctuary animals that, due to circumstance, cannot be released into the wild.

For more info on our stories please look at our website: https://hesc.co.za/our-species/ https://hesc.co.za/our-story/

Where the volunteer program comes into play is for awareness and education on all that we do. Volunteers get hands on experience working with our animals, assisting in preparing their food, whether it is meat for our cheetahs or milk bottles for our rhino calves, feeding them under the watchful eye of our skilled Curator-team, and aiding with enrichment as well as helping with conservation and maintenance projects around the centre.

When any medical procedures need to be done on any of our animals, the volunteers are able to observe and ask our specialised vet questions and gain experience.

The program also focuses on sightseeing around the Hoedspruit area – which we have found helps people adjust to the work in the centre, if they know they are doing something fun the next day.

Sightseeing includes going to the Kruger National Park, visiting our sister company that deals with Elephant rehabilitation, as well as visiting local other wildlife centres.

An opportunity where you could gain invaluable work experience and have an amazing time in Africa, please let us know and we can share the course details and start the journey.

Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon (Recent graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply)

Meopham Veterinary Hospital

Who are we?

We are an independent modern small animal hospital based in Meopham, Kent with 3 sister practices in Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Swanscombe. We have a great reputation and see a wide variety of first opinion and referral cases from all over the Southeast.

We are a 17-vet team with 11 certificates between us, including 3 in surgery and diagnostic imaging, 2 in medicine and 1 in ophthalmology, anaesthesia and ECC. A further 4 vets are studying for certificates in cardiology and medicine and imaging. As you can see CPD, and training is especially important to us. We often do in-house training and recent surgical teaching sessions.

We have superb facilities including laparoscopy, 16 slice CT, DR radiography, doppler ultrasound, endoscopy (including paediatric bronchoscopy), multiparameter monitors, syringe drivers, blood gas and coagulation analysers. Everything you need to provide great care.

We have a culture of listening; your input and ideas really matter here. We believe in evidence-based medicine and are constantly reviewing what we do and are always striving for the best. We  run clinical clubs every Thursday morning.

We’re a really sociable bunch.. Many of our vet team also attend clubs in the evenings; cricket, hockey, amateur dramatics are some of the activities our vets enjoy. We are keen to make sure they can attend, so they just give us their evening commitments and we build the rota around this.

We have low staff turnover. EMS students and visitors to the practice comment on how well all areas of the team get on; nobody is too busy or too important to stop and help.

New graduate and certificate support

We have 2 Vet GDP advisors at Meopham and one at Tonbridge and Sevenoaks.  We have dedicated time allocated in the diary for mentoring 1:1 sessions. We love teaching and are an approved practice, facilitating IMR training for students on rotation from the University of Surrey at Meopham, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks.

We have a well-structured induction programme for any new members of the team, but for new graduates we also have a phased approach to consultations, initially blocking out every other slot in the diary so you don’t feel rushed. We also have a dedicated surgical day at the hospital once a week with your own mentor, and we make sure you can work your way through your surgical check list, initially developing your confidence in neutering, then moving on to other procedures as your skills develop. You will also have the support of a more experienced vet when needed during any weekend work.

We offer additional CPD days for vets studying towards certificates and they also have their own mentors. Their level of teaching steps up a gear, so for someone who is doing a surgical certificate for example would be scrubbing into things like patella luxation’s, getting involved in basic orthopaedics and learning to use the lap spay equipment.

About the role

The role will involve time spent at both Meopham Veterinary Hospital and normally one branch surgery – with dedicated days and VetGDP advisors at each site. A modern house is available if required.

We run a dedicated night team of vets and RVNs so that we could provide a better service for both our clinicians and our patients. This means there are no routine nights for our day vets.

The package

Salary £36,000-£48,000 depending on experience.

Visa sponsorship is available.

Standard CPD allowance is 5 days and £1000, but we frequently support particular courses above this, for example one of our clinicians undertook a TPLO course in America and we were happy to fund all the costs involved. We support certificates with up to £3000- and 10-days CPD.

5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays and increases to 6 weeks with length of service.

The Area

Meopham is a great area to live; there is a direct train to London Victoria which takes 35mins, nearby Ebbsfleet International will whisk you to London St Pancras in just 19 minutes, or give you access to straight to Europe. You can drive down to the Kent coast in an hour. There are great connections to the M20, M25 and A2/M2. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous, and there are ample sports clubs nearby including rugby, hockey, cricket and sailing. Gatwick is 45 minutes away.

How to Apply

Send CV with covering letter to enquiries@meophamvets.co.uk

We have welcomed and employed vets from Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, Estonia, Italy, Romania, Netherlands and Belgium in the past. Part of the language requirements now include achieving a score of at least 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in one of the listening, reading, writing and speaking components of the academic version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Or, achieving an overall average score of at least a grade B in the vet version of the Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum C+ in one of the listening, reading, writing and speaking sub-tests.

We are confident that you'll like working here, but if it isn't what you wanted in reality, then no worries. Note that the working visa is Cotts-specific, meaning that overseas vets leaving employment early in this scenario would legally have to leave the UK and apply for new jobs from home.
