How our Memory Tree is transforming animal care
Our beautiful Memory Tree is a lasting tribute to the powerful bond we share with our beloved pets. Every engraved leaf has helped fund vital equipment, pioneering treatments, and innovative research, transforming the care we can provide to animals.
Thanks to your generosity, our Memory Tree has supported countless animals and the dedicated teams who care for them. Here’s how your leaves have made a lasting impact over the years:
2018 – Supporting the RVC Blood Donor Programme
In 2018 we were able to strengthen the RVC Blood Donor Programme by funding vital tools such as tube welders. These allow the team to safely split blood collections into smaller units, maximising the use of our blood products. This equipment also lets us store feline blood, something no other UK hospital can currently do, ensuring anaemic cats can be treated quickly in an emergency.
2020 – High Flow Oxygen Therapy
Patients with significant breathing problems, which could involve disease of the lungs or airways, require oxygen therapy to improve their condition. Previously, advanced oxygen therapy required invasive ventilation under anaesthetic, which was risky and costly. Thanks to our Memory Tree, our Critical Care team gained access to high flow oxygen therapy, a non-invasive treatment that delivers lifesaving oxygen safely and comfortably. This means we can now treat more patients, with better outcomes.
2020 – Enhancing Ophthalmology with an Operating Microscope
Our Memory Tree also helped fund an operating microscope for our Ophthalmology Service. This advanced technology allows our surgeons to perform delicate eye procedures with far greater precision, opening the door to new treatments that were previously only available within very few centres in Europe. By funding this equipment, the RVC was also able to pass on the previous microscope to Equine, ensuring even more animals benefit from improved surgical precision and care.
2020-2021 – Advancing Diagnostic Imaging
Donations from our Memory Tree contributed to expanding our diagnostic imaging facilities. Diagnostic imaging is an essential part of modern veterinary care, helping us to see in incredible detail. This technology allows our teams to quickly and accurately diagnose complex conditions, giving patients the best chance of recovery.
2023 – Cardiac Ultrasound Machine for Cardiology
In 2023, Our Memory Tree funding provided our Cardiology team with a cardiac ultrasound machine. This vital piece of equipment enables the RVC’s Cardiology Team and Cardiothoracic Service to perform ultrasounds on patients in the operating theatre and on those too sick to be moved from the ICU. For the first time, cardiac ultrasounds can now be carried out simultaneously in the clinic and in operating theatres, ensuring more pets receive the critical care they need.
2024 – The Hidden Menace Research
Most recently, our Memory Tree has funded a PhD research project investigating multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). These bacteria are a growing threat to both animal and human health. By studying how they spread in hospitals and the community, this research will help us improve infection control and protect vulnerable patients. It also provides vital education for veterinary professionals and pet owners alike, ensuring better awareness and safer practices for years to come.
