Owen graduated from Cambridge University in 2005 and worked in a rural practice for three years before undertaking a rotating small animal internship and then a stint as a veterinary officer in India. Upon returning to the UK in 2010, Owen settled into a job in a large hospital practice and referral centre.  He passed examinations to award him membership of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (chapter of small animal medicine) in 2012 and accepted a position as a resident in oncology at the QMH in early 2014.
