YOUR GIFT TO THE NEXT GENERATION
Throughout our 226 year history, legacies have played a vital role in the development of the Royal Veterinary College helping us shape the profession as we know it today. They continue to enable us to advance veterinary medicine in so many ways. Legacies from our Alumni and supporters have helped us to build and equip our hospitals, enable students to realise their dreams of a career in veterinary medicine or science and support world-leading research.
Over the next two pages you will see how legacies from RVC Alumni have been of enormous benefit to RVC students.
If you are considering leaving a gift to the College in your Will, you may wish to talk to us to let us know your wishes and intentions. We can provide you with information about how to ensure your legacy will realise these wishes or simply send you a pack which you can read through in your own time. Please call 01707 666237 or e-mail act@rvc.ac.uk and we will be happy to help.
THE SAM HIGNETT TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP
Travel scholarships enable students to broaden their horizons and gain experience to enhance their learning and help inform their future careers. The Sam Hignett Scholarship was established by a legacy from the wife of an alumnus who understood how invaluable this sort of experience could be to a young student. Here are this year’s awardees:
RACHEL GARTY
Rachel Garty travelled to the University of Pennsylvania this year to attend the Student American Veterinary Medical Association Symposium (SAVMA). The three day event was a fantastic opportunity for her to meet students and professors from the US and further afield, with lectures, practical sessions, social events and exhibitions.
Exploring career options, comparing the UK and US job market as well as hearing lectures from specialists in their field, flown in from across the USA, were just some of the highlights.
“I am forever indebted to the ACT for generously allocating me a Sam Hignett travel scholarship. The knowledge I gained from the conference will allow me to inform other veterinary students at the RVC on applying for jobs in the US.
Upon graduation I hope to pursue a residency in either pathology or large animal medicine followed by a PhD. The 2018 SAVMA symposium has affirmed my aspirations to follow a research-based career and provided me with the information required to achieve this.”
TAVISHI PANDYA
We were pleased to be able to support Tavishi Pandya this year with a grant enabling her to travel to Malaysia and further the RVC’s connection with the IVSA (International Veterinary Students Association) at their 66th congress.
“The IVSA hold an Annual Congress and Symposium in a different country each year. I knew I wanted to be involved on a more global level and thanks to this funding I was able to travel to Malaysia and apply for a positioninthesecretariattowhichI was successful.
“I have now been on the IVSA Global Committee for just under a year. This has given me so many incredible experiences as well as the opportunity to meet new students from around the world, developing my own personal skills and making lifelong friends. I am now in a position to run for a role on the Executive Committee this July in Poland, which
would be an amazing stepping stone in my career and help me to really fulfil my potential.”
CLAIRE SCOTT
Claire has been accepted as an intern at the World Health Organisation this summer, where she will be working within the Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. She hopes this will not only provide valuable experience, but also reassure her that her current career goals are right for her.
“I hope to contribute to important work on a global scale and gain an understanding of how I could later slot in to such an organisation.”
We are looking forward to hearing how Claire gets on.
Accepting voluntary work overseas undoubtedly expands students’ awareness of worldwide veterinary and health related issues and provides invaluable experience to add to their studies. It is only thanks to legacies such as this that such experiences are possible.
