The photograph, taken by Michael Frank, is of a 40-year-old specimen from the Lanyon Anatomy Museum at The Royal Veterinary College, and is part of a project between Michael and Nick Short, Head of the eMedia Unit at the RVC, to bring new perspectives to a selection of specimens at the Lanyon Anatomy Museum.

Listen to Nick describe some of the common and more peculiar features of animal anatomy found in utero, from a pregnant cat uterus and conjoined piglets to multiple vagina in the wallaby, and hear how Michael brings these old specimen pots to life using the latest in digital photography.

Entries are now open for the 2016 Wellcome Image Awards and the deadline for submissions is 9 September 2015.

The winning images will go on display in science centres and public galleries around the world.
