Wellcome Discovery Award Secured for Ground-breaking Malaria Research
The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is pleased to announce that Dr Ellen Knuepfer, Senior Lecturer in Vaccinology, and Dr Melissa Hart, Wellcome Trust Early Career Award Fellow, are serving as Co-Investigators on a newly awarded Wellcome Discovery Award.

The grant, led by Professor Matt Higgins, EP Abraham Chair of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford, will fund pioneering research into the molecular mechanisms of erythrocyte invasion in malaria.
This prestigious award, totalling nearly £4 million, will support collaborative work between the University of Oxford and the Royal Veterinary College. The project aims to uncover how malaria parasites invade red blood cells - a crucial step in understanding how the disease replicates and causes illness - and to inform the design of more effective vaccines.
The RVC is delighted to be part of this transformative research, contributing its expertise in infectious disease and vaccinology to advance global efforts against malaria.
