The Diagnostic Sequence

Your diagnostic plan will:

  • List the tests required to confirm ('rule in') or exclude ('rule out') each of the likely differentials and may include trial therapy

  • Take account of necessary therapy for the affected animal. This should be designed to ameliorate the disease without prejudicing the likelihood of making a diagnosis

  • Allow for a change in approach if the likely differentials are ruled out

Make sure that you communicate your plan to the owner so that he or she has realistic expectations and feels part of the team.  This will promote good morale and also compliance during the diagnostic process.
