Splash-proof face shields are required for routine periodontal
treatment. Surgical masks are an alternative and must be worn during
any power scaling or drilling to prevent inhalation of the aerosol
of infected water droplets. Be aware that they have a limited period
of effectiveness.
Protective spectacles must always be worn, if a dental drill or
scaler is used, to prevent calculus or other debris hitting the
eyes and to reduce aerosol contact with the conjunctiva.
