Animal and Plant Health Agency

Animal and Plant Health AgencyThe Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), has multiple global responsibilities, acting as both a national and European reference centre or laboratory for several exotic and zoonotic notifiable diseases for international organisations such as the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).

Royal Veterinary College

The Royal Veterinary College is one of the world’s leading providers of veterinary education and research. The College's research is of the highest quality and has an impact on the health and welfare of humans and animals around the world. Expertise in risk analysis and modelling within the Royal Veterinary College mostly resides within the Veterinary Epidemiology, Economics and Public Health group.

International networks

Both institutes have extensive international networks and global responsibilities acting as reference centres for international organisations such as the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). They regularly contribute to capacity building, research and policy advice either directly to national governments, or through international organisations.

As part of their international activities in risk analysis and modelling the hosting institutions have collaborated with partners in government and academia from 57 countries and 140 institutes in recent years. The RVC and APHA have also established links with many of the institutes that are part of other regional collaborating centres (CC), such as the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (CC for Epidemiology and Risk Assessment of Aquatic Animal Diseases) and the Instituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (CC for Epidemiology, Training and Control of Emerging Avian Diseases) in addition to collaborating centres for risk analysis, modelling and related areas outside of the European region (e.g. ongoing collaboration with Chinese Animal Health and Epidemiology Centre to provide joint training to veterinary services, spanning more than eight years).
