The Transfusion Medicine Service use equipment of the same technical specification required for human medicine in the UK, meaning that we are working to rigorous standards.

Equipment includes:

  • Plasma freezer and packed red blood cell fridge for appropriate storage of our products.
  • Centrifuge allowing us to make the most of each donation a pet makes, by splitting up the blood into different components.
  • Cell salvage machine can be used before, during or after operations, or in patients that have bleeding for non-surgical reasons, to allow us to process haemorrhaged blood from a patient and process it so that the red blood cells can be recycled and re-administered to the patient. This is particularly useful in the patients treated by our cardiothoracic surgery program.
