Delayed tests are procedures which take longer to carry out
or which require time-consuming laboratory procedures. You
may be able to do some of these in your practice laboratory.
They include
- Special staining techniques, such as Ziehl-Neelsen
for Mycobacteria (acid fast) or modified Ziehl-Neelsen for
Nocardia (weakly acid fast)
- Incubation of inoculated culture media and associated
procedures e.g. antibiotic sensitivity tests (see bacteriology)
- Biopsy. Specimens may be taken quickly under local anaesthesia,
e.g. lesions of the trunk, or may require general anaesthesia,
e.g. lesions of the face or limbs (see Diagnostic Procedures
in Canine and Feline Dermatology)
- Blood tests, including serology
- Dynamic hormone function tests such as dexamethasone suppression
test or ACTH stimulation (see endocrinology)
- Intradermal allergy tests
