Last week, the Structure and Motion Lab’s Dr Zoe Davies paid a visit to a community group for older people in North London to talk about her and Professor Jim Usherwood’s Wellcome Trust funded research into human and animal walking.

The North London Cares community network, which organised the event, shared their enthusiasm for Dr Davies's workshop on Twitter.

The residents of Kentish Town learned about the biomechanics of walking and the changes that occur with age. Attendees had fun taking part in walking races as well as learning how to walk like the animals, finding out whether they crawled more like a horse or more like a hippo. Zoe took along with her the lab’s high-tech pressure mat system, allowing the participants insight into the forces they exerted while walking as well as talking about stability.
