Prof. Stuart Reid receives CBE
Professor Stuart Reid at Buckingham Palace
Stuart Reid was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the
Queen’s Birthday Honours, in June, for his contributions to the veterinary profession and higher education.
Professor Reid is recognised by the RCVS as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology and as an expert in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists. As you may know, he is a graduate of the University of Glasgow and has led the RVC since 2011.
Stuart has been a vocal champion
for One Health, an approach which recognises the interrelation of human, animal and ecosystem health, and seeks to draw on multiple disciplines to tackle the world’s major public health threats.
He has helped to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge, focusing primarily on zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance, has published over 160 scientific papers, most recently in the journals Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), and has secured over £15 million in competitive funding during his career.
He was President of the RCVS from 2014-15, leading major governance changes and the implementation
of the honorary ‘Doctor’ title for UK veterinarians, and has held senior offices in the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges in the USA and in the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. He currently chairs the Mind Matters initiative of the RCVS, for which he ran the London Marathon and raised over £14,000 for mental health awareness.
Stuart has made significant contributions to public service, having been a trustee of The Donkey Sanctuary since 1996 and Chairman since 2007. He is also
a trustee of the University of London and has served on the Veterinary Products Committee, and now sits on the Board of the Food Standards Agency.
Upon learning he had been appointed, Stuart commented: “I am delighted and humbled. It is truly a privilege to have had the opportunity to be part
of both the veterinary profession and the university community, and to have worked with colleagues throughout my career who have a huge commitment to the common good. I am very grateful that the importance of animal health, education and science is being acknowledged in this way.”
He also said: “The recognition is a reflection on what we have achieved, and are achieving, collectively at the RVC.”
The investiture ceremony took place on 17th October, when Stuart went along to Buckingham Palace to receive the prestigious award from the Princess Royal. You can view Stuart receiving his award here: https://bit.ly/2OGpgJ6
