New osteoarthritis clinic at RVC small animal referrals

Last updated 6 September 2018

A new referral clinic to improve animals' quality of life and to support pet owners and vets in practice has been established at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals in Hawkshead, near Potters Bar.

The Osteoarthritis (OA) clinic consultations are conducted by an experienced orthopaedic veterinary surgeon and a qualified veterinary physiotherapist. In each case a full history is taken, a thorough physical examination is conducted and treatment options are discussed with owners.

Where there are current X-rays available, these will be reviewed. In some cases it may be necessary to take further X-rays and these can be undertaken at the time of consultation.

It can be difficult to identify the best treatment to improve the quality of life of individual pets with osteoarthritis. Treatment options include medical or surgical management, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and acupuncture. The OA clinic veterinarians work with referring veterinarians and owners to determine the best option to maximise each animal’s quality of life.

Referrals are made by vets, and upon receiving the referral a member of the Customer Services team will contact owners to arrange an appointment. Referring vets can refer by calling 01707 666399 or by emailing reception@rvc.ac.uk.
