Jackie Cardwell (PI) and Tierney Kinnison (post-doctoral research assistant) are working with Ken Smith (RVC, PPS) and external collaborators Laurent Couëtil, Carrie Roder, Martin Whiting and Claire Wylie on a project funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board.
The project, called ‘Putting Inflammatory Airway Disease back on track’, investigates current evidence and perceptions regarding the respiratory condition Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) in racehorses. It consists of three parts:
- A systematic literature review documenting the evidence base supporting the 2016 Consensus Statement on IAD by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
- Focus groups with UK racehorse veterinary practices to understand vets’ current approaches to diagnosis and management of racehorse respiratory disease and their views on the Consensus Statement definition
- A wider scale questionnaire to collate UK veterinarian’s opinions and current practices.
The project will produce publications relating to these three methods and will highlight areas for future research to enhance the global understanding of IAD.
