Department: Clinical Science and Services

Campus: Hawkshead

Clinical Groups: Equine Diagnostic Imaging

Rhiannon is a Lecturer in Equine Diagnostic Imaging which involves a combination of clinical work in the Equine Referral Hospital and teaching undergraduate veterinary students. She holds the ECVDI Diploma in Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging, is an EBVS European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, an Advanced Veterinary Practitioner and has a PhD in Cellular Biology.

Rhiannon graduated from Liverpool University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree and an intercalated degree in Veterinary Anatomy (from Bristol University) which sparked her interest in research. Rhiannon went on to complete an equine internship at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, which focused on poor performance assessments and diagnostic imaging of the horse. She then practised as an equine ambulatory vet in Cambridgeshire. A PhD in Cellular Biology at the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, lead Rhiannon back to Liverpool University. After which, Rhiannon completed a large animal diagnostic imaging residency at the Royal Veterinary College, and is now a lecturer and radiologist working in the Equine Referral Hospital.

For over 5 years, Rhiannon has produced the Equine Veterinary Journal podcast and her research interests focus on imaging of the head and joint pathology. Rhiannon enjoys running, especially with her 3 dogs, and when she can, eventing.

Rhiannon's research interests lie mainly in orthopaedic imaging and imaging of the head. During her PhD in Cellular Biology at the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, Liverpool University, she studied the effects of small interfering RNA (siRNA) on the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with equine osteoarthritis and synovitis

In a 70% clinical role at the Equine Referral Hospital, Rhiannon teaches undergraduate veterinary students during their diagnostic imaging clinical rotation, alongside students who have chosen to spend additional time in the Equine Diagnostic Imaging department. Rhiannon lectures and teaches practical sessions during the final year Diagnostic Imaging electives, and is involved in undergraduate examinations.

Rhiannon lectures on several CPD courses, both at the RVC and at other institutions.
