Muhammad is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Reproduction and a member of the Reproduction Research Group.
Muhammad is trained as a veterinarian from the College of Veterinary Sciences, Lahore and had MSc (Hons) in Animal Reproduction before he obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham. For his PhD he worked on the control of gonadotrophins release under the supervision of Professor William Haresign. His interest in neuroendocrinology made him to move to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA to work with Professor Gary Jackson on Control of GnRH release using Push-pull perfusion technique. This was followed by teaching as Assistant Professor in the college of Veterinary Sciences, Lahore for 3 years. Subsequently he joined university of Nottingham as Research fellow to work on defective luteal function in ruminants before moving to the Royal Veterinary College in 1999. At the RVC, his research has expanded to include urinary incontinence in the dog along with different aspects of ruminant reproduction. Muhammad is a member of the editorial boards of "The International Journal of Veterinary Surgery and Medicine and "Pakistan Veterinary Journal." Muhammad is a Diplomat of European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR).
Muhammad's main research interests are in the general area of animal reproduction:
Role of angiogenic growth factors in the corpus luteum development investigating how the pre-ovulatory LH surge and/or progesterone exposure contribute to the angiogenic growth factors’ expression in the post-ovulatory follicle and/or corpus luteum development. The long-term aim is to develop methodologies to control the timing of the post-ovulatory rise in progesterone to reduce early embryonic death.
Molecular and cellular aspects of the ovine cervical function, in general and the role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in remodelling the cervix during relaxation, in particular.The long-term aim is to develop novel approaches to facilitate trans-cervical intrauterine insemination without compromising fertility not only in sheep but also other species including humans and endangered animal species.
Mechanism of development of urinary incontinence in the dog investigating the role of gonadotrophins and/or their receptors in the development of urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI).
