Over at the College’s small animal hospital, Milly the cat’s brought in with a leg wound that hasn’t healed in 7 weeks. Vet Zoe Halfacree wants to do a skin graft, but before she goes ahead Milly is thoroughly tested to see what bacteria she may be carrying. The tests reveal Milly is a carrier of MRSA. Her body’s own defences are keeping the bacteria under control so her wound hasn’t become infected. But the main concern is that MRSA could spread to other sick animals in the hospital and infect them. Milly’s rushed to an isolation ward while the vets plan her surgery…
Down at London Zoo, Vet Andrew Routh has noticed a fracture in one of Lumpur the tiger’s teeth. Lumpur is one of only 700 Sumatran tigers left in the world, so even something as seemingly small as a broken tooth is a major cause for concern. Andrew calls in human dentist Peter Kertesz to decide if Lumpur needs a filling, or has to have his tooth pulled…
