David Brodbelt

Dave Brodbelt is a Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College and is a European Veterinary Specialist in Anaesthesia.

Biography

Dave graduated from the Cambridge Vet School in 1993 and then undertook a residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia also at Cambridge. In 1998 he gained the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. After that he went into practice for three years, before taking up a PhD at the Animal Health Trust in the Epidemiology Unit, looking at anaesthetic complications in small animal practice (The Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Small Animal Fatalities, CEPSAF).

One of his papers from CEPSAF won the Langley Prize 2008 for the best original paper in the Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia during 2008: Brodbelt, D, Blissitt, K, Hammond, R. Neath, P, Pfeiffer, D, Young, L, Wood, J. The Risk of Death: The Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Small Animal Fatalities (CEPSAF). Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, 35(5):365-73.

After finishing his PhD he moved to the Royal Veterinary College in 2005, initially as Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia and since 2007, as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology.

Research

His main interest is small-animal practice based clinical research. He is involved in the RVC primary practice electronic patient record project (VetCOMPASS,  www.rvc.ac.uk/VetCOMPASS) collecting clinical data from veterinary practice management systems (PMS). Within this project, data are being collected looking at the treatment of skin disease in companion animals (J Summers, BBSRC / Pfizer funded PhD), risk factors for canine cancer (S Middleton, RVC funded PhD) and breed related disease (D O'Neill, RSPCA funded PhD). He is a member of the VeNom Coding Group, www.venomcoding.org, that has developed and is now maintaining standard clinical terms for use in veterinary medicine and represents the VeNom Coding Group within the VetXML Consortium (www.vetxml.org).

He is involved in a number of other clinical and epidemiological projects working with clinicians in the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals at the RVC and also with colleagues in practice. In Veterinary Anaesthesia, following on from his PhD, his research interest continues to centre on perioperative morbid and mortal complications. His PhD thesis is available as a PDF below.

BRODBELT, D.C. (2006) The Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Small Animal Fatalities. PhD Thesis, Royal Veterinary College, University of London.

Teaching

He is involved in teaching Evidence-based Veterinary Medicine (EBVM), Epidemiology and Anaesthesia to the BVetMed Undergraduates, as well as to the Clinical Residents (SCTS) on the MVetMed Programme and the BVSc Nurses at the RVC. He also contributes to the Taught and Distance Learning MSc programmes in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health at the RVC.

He is involved in a LIVE Award teaching project looking at data derived predictors of perfomance for veterinary undergraduates at the RVC (James Bee Teaching Prize 2008-2010) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Clinical

His clinical interests centre around Anaesthesia where he continues to be involved in the supervision of the Senior Clinical Traning Scholars (SCTS) in veterinary anaesthesia and is involved in their research project design and analysis.

Outreach Activities

He is a member of the VeNom Coding Group, that has developed and now maintains the industry standard veterinary medical terminology (VeNom Codes, www.venomcoding.org).

He is a member of the VetXML consortium (www.vetxml.org), an industry body governed by SPVS, that is defining communication standards to make it easier for the veterinary profession to communicate and exchange data.

He is a member of the Kennel Club Canine Health and Genetics Subgroup Advisory Committee (www.thekennelclub.org.uk) established to advise on the development of health screening tests and their effectiveness, and assess new tests that may be incorporated into the Kennel Club Accredited Breeder Scheme. The committee will also advise on breeding and registration issues that protect or enhance genetic diversity in individual breeds.
