Steven Hailes

Dr Stephen Hailes is currently Deputy Head of Department in the Department of Computer Science at UCL. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with both undergraduate and PhD degrees, and then moved to UCL to work on networked multimedia, giving the first public demonstration of this over packet switched networks in 1992. Since that time, he has developed extensive research expertise in the problems of mobile and sensor-based systems, specifically looking at small devices, intelligent use of the relatively few resources they have, and security. He is now PI or Co-I on a wide range of national and EC-funded projects in the sensor, including the £3.6M EPSRC WINES project SESAME (SEnsing for Sport and Managed Exercise) project, which is an interdisciplinary project exploring the use of sensor systems in precisely monitoring athletes (specifically sprinters) outside lab-based environments; an EPSRC funded feasibility study to create non-invasive devices to measure muscle tissue oxygenation in elite athletes and a range of more computer-science oriented projects in subject areas ranging from computational trust to the future Internet.

Stephen is currently on a year’s sabbatical at RVC to work with Alan Wilson and his group, primarily to see whether it is possible to strengthen the interdisciplinary links that have already been established and to conduct some hypothesis driven research. There are a number of parts to this: (i) to gain a deeper understanding of animal biology, particularly that relating to athletic performance of human and other animals from a group that is acknowledged to be world leading in the area; (ii) to explore further opportunities for collaboration and to seek funding for those activities where appropriate; and (iii) to undertake research within the scope of our current joint research activities, most specifically SESAME
