Example Force Plate Traces

The graphs in Figure 1 show typical fore and hind limb force traces respectively. The large 'hump' shows the total vertical force, the smaller hump (which starts positive and becomes negative) shows cranio-caudal force and the final trace shows medio-lateral force. the system will recognise changes in the shape and magnitude of these traces which indicate the onset of lameness.

Figure 2 shows how the centre of pressure (calculated via the point of zero moment) moves through one stride for the fore and hind limb respectively. This measure helps us to understand which part of the cow's foot is bearing the weight of the body. The axes refer to the co-ordinate system used on the force plates which have their origin in the centre of the force plate.
