Structure and Motion Laboratory

Research Interests

Introduction

The goal of our research is to develop and use innovative techniques to answer fundamental and applied questions relating to the control and mechanical constraint of locomotion and movement. This is achieved by examining the physiology and mechanics of humans and other animals, which have evolved different athletic functions. Our research includes investigating how animals (including humans) adapt to musculo-skeletal injury and its treatment via mechanical intervention. Our aim is to identify new physiological and biomechanical mechanisms and to understand the importance of these mechanisms at many different levels from the cellular to the whole organism (either fit or dysfunctional), population, and even whole evolutionary lineages.

Our research team includes physiologists, biomechanists, palaeontologists, veterinarians, physicians and surgeons, physiotherapists, computer scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

The research falls into several interlinked areas of interest:

This research would not be possible without the generous support of those bodies which fund our research.
