The London Learners' Council

The RVC and the London Excellence Hub are pleased to announce their collaborative project Gifted Voices: The London Learner's Council. The LEH awarded the Royal Veterinary College project funding to help harness the opinions of London's talented learners. By providing London's young people with a forum for participation, we aim to give the students a say in how activities, projects and events for gifted London pupils are delivered.

Launch Event for the London Learners' Council

The London Learners' Council was launched on the 10th October at Queen Mary University. Students from across London took part in the event designed to improve their communication skills so that their student voice will be heard more effectively. In the morning, workshops on persuasive writing, presentation skills, dealing with questions/hecklers and voice projection were delivered by tutors representing the worlds of work and academia. In the afternoon, those that had been shortlisted for places on the Council took part in a Hustings. The candidates delivered 30 seconds speeches on why they should be chosen to represent the opinions of London's gifted learners before each answering a question from the floor. All of the pupils who attended the event were then asked to vote for 2 students from each year group. The 12 winners (two for each year group of secondary school, with years 12 and 13 combined) were announced at the end of the event and now make up the London Learners' Council.

RVC Academics mentoring talented students from Southwark

Southwark mapThe RVC have also teamed up with the Southwark gifted and talented program to provide four academics to mentor four pupils from across the Southwark borough. Each of the year 10 pupils will be completing an Extended Project (which is normally undertaken in year 12 or 13) and the academics have been paired with the pupils according to their scientific interests. The first meetings between the RVC representatives and the pupils they are mentoring will take place in the coming weeks. Further information about this project is available by contacting Beckie Knight.
