How to Apply

Academic Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally final year degree students although students with two years of pre-vet will be considered. A GPA of at least 3.4 is required. Applicants in the final year of their degree or graduates will normally be considered initially for our four year accelerated programme provided they have taken an appropriate Biological Science based degree. Applicants who are selected for interview but unsuccessful in gaining a place on the four year programme may be considered for our five year programme.

For 2012 entry, we do not require our applicants to sit the GRE examinations (or any other standardised tests).

Pre-requisite courses

Required at Upper Level:

  • 8 semester credits in Organic Chemistry with lab
  • At least 4 credits in Principles of Biology or General Biology.
  • At least 4 further credits in any of the following: Principles of Biology, General Biology, Animal Biology, Zoology, Microbiology or Genetics (all with lab)

Also required (at any level):

  • 4 credits in Biochemistry

Strongly recommended:

Work experience requirements

A significant amount of Extra-Mural and Intra-Mural training is incorporated into our degree (see What will I learn?). However we also ask for prior work experience, both in veterinary practice and in other animal environments, in order to develop animal handling skills and obtain an insight into the work of veterinary surgeons.

Before you apply, you must have completed the minimum requirements:

  • minimum of two weeks work experience in a veterinary practice
  • and a minimum of two weeks in a different animal environment (outside of your home environment).

Examples of such an environment include, but are not limited to: kennels, cattery, animal shelter, farm, stables, city farm, pet shop, lambing, wildlife park, zoo etc. You do not have to have experience in all these areas.
