Umaymah Hewitt

BSc Bioveterinary Sciences - Year 3

I wanted to study at the RVUmaymah HewittC for so many reasons! Not only is the RVC the oldest and largest veterinary school in the UK, but it is also on the forefront of cutting edge research and innovations in the scientific and veterinary fields. I wanted to be able to study in the company of like-minded students who are all enthusiastic and passionate about veterinary science and medicine, and be taught by professional scientists.

Since starting on the Bioveterinary Sciences course I’ve discovered that I really enjoy dissections! It can sometimes be very difficult reading about anatomy in a book, but actually dissecting a cadaver to see the configuration of internal systems really clarifies any confusion.

Anatomy and physiology are two areas of knowledge that have always fascinated me, and here on the BSc I’m finally learning about the stuff that I’ve always wanted to know; it is simple amazing to go into a lecture and come out with the answers to so many questions that I’ve always had in my mind! The lectures are well-formatted, and the lecturers themselves are very helpful. The lecturers’ enthusiasm and obvious passion for their respective fields of expertise really is infectious, and incredibly motivating. They provide lots of information and references for further reading, which makes it very easy for us to expand on what we learnt in a lecture.

The tutorial sessions are very helpful when it comes to developing as a scientist, and working towards attaining a professional attitude and the essential skills that will help greatly when it comes to finding jobs or furthering your education in the scientific field.

The 24/7–access library, IT facilities and huge archive of scientific and veterinary journals available to students are absolutely invaluable. The specimens in the museum are also a great resource for backing up anatomy lectures or practicals; seeing the real thing is a big bonus after reading about it in a book.

I love the fact that the RVC is the largest veterinary school in the UK... the diversity really contributes to making the atmosphere absolutely fantastic. There are people from all walks of life, and on different courses too, so don’t be fooled into thinking that the RVC produces only vets; this is a great place to find all sorts of professionals, from epidemiologists to neurologists, pharmacologists and beyond!

Being a student in London is an unforgettable experience; you can never run out of things to do! It is incredibly dynamic; there are so many places to go and things to see, and it’s changing all the time. Of course I miss home, but London is the ideal place to help you get over any homesickness really quickly!

I really don’t know what I want to do when I graduate! But the RVC’s heritage and prestige in the veterinary world is evident; and as a student of the RVC, I can be confident that I am being provided with the ideal starting point from which to continue my career. In addition the BSc Bioveterinary Sciences degree is providing me with such a broad range of skills and knowledge that I am privileged to have the choice of a wide variety of postgraduate opportunities. I’d like to use my time at the RVC, in the company of so many inspiring scientists, to explore the many possible career paths available to me.
