Luca Zanelli

Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing - Year 2

I wanted to study at the RVC because its reputation is excellent and I believe it is the best place to study and excel in the veterinary field.

I undertook four A Levels to get into the RVC: English Literature, Italian, Religious Studies and History. I also did 3 weeks work experience at my local animal shelter before and during application. I did exactly what I do now, mostly packing kits (which I love – sad I know!) and assisting during surgery.

The interview at the RVC was nerve-wracking, but I got a good insight into life at the RVC, and decided I wanted to go.

On the course, I particularly enjoy learning about Pharmacology as I find it fascinating, but I also did enjoy Anatomy and Physiology. I also enjoy studying with the friends I have made at the RVC.

The work placement I currently attend is brilliant – the staff are wonderful and the clients are lovely (generally) and have accepted me as one of the team. I am involved in most cases that pass in and out of the practice.

To socialise, I tend to go clubbing with the people from my placement or other friends. I also use my car as a place for social gatherings with my friends from my old school and we just drive here, there and everywhere – it’s great! The atmosphere at the RVC is warm and welcoming – the staff are lovely and try to help whenever they can.

One of my aspirations is to become a lecturer in Veterinary Nursing, as I have tried teaching and really enjoyed it. However, I love being in practice more although it is a bit premature to think about this (I need to qualify first!). I would also really like to run my own veterinary practice over in Italy, and would love to introduce the profession of nursing to the country (talk about ambition, but you never know!).
