Jennifer Yarin

America

4th year BVetMed

Graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a BA in Biology.

RVC’s initial appeal for me was its location in the UK. Having been fortunate enough to study abroad during my undergraduate degree and travel a bit, I knew that I wanted to do my veterinary degree abroad as well. But after some research and a trip to the London where I met a few students and toured the campus, I was sold.

RVC is a very ‘hands on’ university, and a large part of the BVetMed course is practical study: animal husbandry, dissections, histology and clinical labs. Lectures are normally accompanied by tutorial sessions where there is opportunity to speak with lecturers one-on-one while problem solving.

During the first two years, you do husbandry work, and the following three, clinical work. As RVC is internationally renowned, some of this work can be done abroad, so there is a lot of opportunity to visit home or other parts of the world! A great thing about RVC is that the first two years of BVetMed are spent in Camden, which is basically ‘the village’ of London, complete with markets, bars and restaurants and very close to Regents Park, the largest park in London and home to the London Zoo.

In the final three years you get the other end of the spectrum in Potters Bar, which is beautiful countryside, but still only a 20 minute commute into London.

I had no trouble adjusting to life at RVC but it is different to home: there is a lot of self-directed learning and emphasis is put on end of year exams, which include oral assessments. What I like most is that you learn both UK and USA perspectives on all subjects and when you qualify, you can basically practice anywhere in the world.
