Inga Jensen

Canada
BVetMed - Year 2

Inga Jensen BVetMed Year 2I chose the RVC for a variety of reasons. I grew up in Germany and wanted to return to Europe at some point in my life and studying in the UK struck me as the perfect opportunity to combine a veterinary degree with doing just that. The RVC’s location in central London, reputation and AVMA accreditation were the main factors for my decision to study here.

I attended High School in Canada where the school system operates differently than in Britain. While I didn’t complete A levels, I concentrated on sciences throughout High School and graduated with Honours and received unconditional acceptance to one of Canada’s top universities. Later I completed a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Physiology at the University of British Columbia in Canada, graduating in the top 15% of my faculty.

I spent the majority of my undergraduate years working at multiple small animal clinics as a clinic assistant and receptionist. Additionally, I also volunteered at my local SPCA animal shelter and at the Animal Care Center at my University’s Medical School research facility. Apart from my animal related experience, I also spent my time at the local children’s hospital and a Paediatric oncology camp as a volunteer.

My first year at the College was challenging, but I enjoyed the course material and learned a lot. I particularly like the manner in which the course is taught. Students are encouraged to learn independently and integrate their knowledge at all times. We spend little time in lectures as students are expected to advance and reinforce their knowledge through dissection, group problem solving sessions, practicals and private study.

Compared to my undergraduate years, the RVC is a much smaller college and the student body is very friendly. We spend a lot of time getting to know each other in our various practicals. Besides the very welcoming environment at the RVC, studying veterinary medicine whilst living in one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world also has many advantages. When I’m not revising, I am able to enjoy London and the many activities the city has to offer. There are endless opportunities to see sights and go out. I also find it incredibly easy to get around the city via the bus, tube or by foot which makes exploring London very easy. It is exciting to be in a busy city with so much history and such a mix of nationalities and cultures.
