Elizabeth Gifford
Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing - Year 2
I chose the RVC because I needed to study veterinary nursing somewhere within travelling distance of my home. As a mature student I had already taken A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science in order to study Zoology. I also undertook two weeks of work experience at a local private vet practice. I answered phones, helped with deliveries and filing. I cleaned kennels, equipment, public areas and the toilets. I groomed animals, watched them recover and observed consultations and surgery – lots of the things I do now. I phoned and wrote to every local vet practice in the phone book until someone would accept me.
The interview at the RVC was relaxed - four of us were interviewed together, asked a few questions about expectations and why we wanted to do the course. It was as much a chance for us to find out about the course as for the course director to find out about us. There was also a written component. I really enjoyed the tour of the campus.
I am enjoying the course, it is interesting and relevant, although there is a huge amount of coursework and sometimes we study in more depth than I would have expected. So far I have studied human & animal first aid, anatomy & physiology, breeds & behaviour, legislation, animal handling & management and communication. I found the anatomy and physiology lectures quite intense, but it was interesting. The bones and muscles work on the Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard, was very useful – as was getting the see and handling the real bones in class. I also feel that communication is one of my strengths and the role plays in that class were good fun.
The work placements I have done have all been very different. I loved my first placement at Wood Green Animal Shelter as I had the opportunity to experience all aspects of vet nursing and develop my skills. I was also very lucky to get a placement at London Zoo where I worked with a range of exotics including observing procedures on a venomous snake, toucan, lemur and tiger. The nurses I have worked with have been incredibly patient and have helped me get over my fear of veinepuncture!
The atmosphere at the RVC is very friendly. Many of the students are very focused. The whole college is pretty small, and you get to know everyone in the class. I feel we all have something in common.
Once I graduate I will probably locum first whilst deciding where I would like to work permanently. Of the placements I have seen I have preferred charities. I am particularly interested in exotics so an exotics practice or even a zoo would be fantastic. I may consider further study in the future once I have gained more experience.
