Employability Statement
The RVC is the oldest veterinary college in the UK, and part of the University of London. It enjoys a prestigious reputation throughout the world, and the expertise of our staff is internationally recognised. We received the maximum score of 24 out of 24 in an assessment of teaching standards by the Quality Assurance Agency in 2003. The Veterinary medicine degree is accredited by the The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and was the first UK veterinary school to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Our graduates benefit from the ability to practice throughout both the UK and the USA, and further afield.
The RVC Careers Office (a division of the Specialist Institutions’ Careers Service, itself part of The Careers Group, University of London) provides comprehensive careers support for all our students. Students receive; one-to-one guidance sessions with a professional Careers Advisor, workshops supporting job-seeking skills, careers information fairs, forums and presentations with employer representatives from targeted professions and organisations, one-to-one practice interview sessions, access to physical careers library containing employer and employment sector information and personality questionnaires and aptitude tests to help prepare students for employer assessment methods. Post-graduation support is offered through GradClub. Our on-line portal for Alumni, RVC4life hosts information about careers and includes a jobs board. We have our own 'RVC Futures' on-line resource, containing information and signposting for any animal-related career at every level. There is a Careers Tutor with whom students can have informal discussions regarding future career options.
The RVC has an integrated programme of business and enterprise skills training across all of its undergraduate and postgraduate science, technology and healthcare degree programmes, and Professional Studies is part of the curricula.
There are innovative opportunities to be part of the Student Research Team and chances to publish and present papers at conferences - see Student Research.
A sandwich year based in industry, either in the UK or overseas is now offered for the BSc Bioveterinary Science degree. BVetMed students are required to do work experience placements (AHEMS and EMS) some of which can be done overseas, giving international students an opportunity to explore options at home. Veterinary Nursing students must do at least 70 weeks of practical training at a range of veterinary practices, including the RVC's own world-leading hospitals.
Our Widening Participation and Community Engagement department offers opportunities for work experience, for example as Student Ambassadors.
Graduate-level bioscientists, specifically recent graduates with limited workplace experience benefit from paid internships with host companies from the bioscience sector - see RVC Enterpise for current schemes.
