Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka

RVC Graduate 1995

Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka was Uganda's first woman to be the country's wildlife veterinary officer and was the star of the BBC documentary, Gladys the African Vet. She is also Founder and Chief Executive Officer of grassroots non-profit organization Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), which makes a significant contribution to Uganda and its wildlife.

Founded in December 2002 Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) actively promotes wildlife conservation and human public health. As animals and people can make each other sick, it is important to merge wildlife conservation with public health. CTPH believes that the efficient and cost effective way of controlling diseases that spread between wildlife, people and their animals is through joined-up human and animal health programs.

The organization aims to:

  • promote conservation and public health by improving primary health care to people and animals in and around protected areas in Africa
  • control disease transmission where wildlife, people and their animals meet

Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka’s interest in conservation started in high school in Uganda, where she revived the Kibuli Secondary School Wildlife Club that had not been functioning for a few years. This was a turning point in her life, where she decided that she wanted to be a vet and work with wild animals. Following her training at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London she worked for over four as a Veterinary Officer for the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and set up a veterinary unit that had not been functioning for 30 years.
