Entry requirements
High Standards with a flexible approach
Application to the Graduate Accelerated Veterinary Medicine programme is competitive, but the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) actively encourages applicants with the desire to succeed. The RVC looks at three areas when deciding whether to invite an applicant to interview:
All three areas are important and are used in our selection process to determine who will be invited to interview. RVC admissions tutors consider all applications carefully on their individual merits. The decision of whether to offer the four-year accelerated or the five-year programme will not be made until we have considered transcripts from first degree(s) and performance at interview.
All applicants must complete the work experience questionnaire and send it by post to the Admissions Office, Royal Veterinary College, Royal College Street, London NW1 0TU. The completed Questionnaire must be received at the College by the UCAS deadline of 15th October.
Below are our minimum requirements relating to academic qualifications, work experience and the BMAT. As this is a very competitive programme, fulfilling these minimum requirements will not guarantee an interview in years when we have many competitive applicants.

Prospective students must have achieved a sufficient level of knowledge in the prescribed subjects before entry to the course. No foundation module in basic science is given within the BVetMed. The course demands an excellent understanding of both written and spoken English language, as demonstrated preferably by an IELTS qualification with an overall level of 7.0 or higher and no less than 6.5 in each component (for full information see IELTS from the British Council). Other English tests are recognised including PTE Academic (minimum score of 65 required - see www.pearsonpte.com ). Contact the Admissions Office if you are taking a different test from the above to see if it is acceptable. All students (except North American college students) apply through UCAS but non-EU international students are not requirered to take the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) |

Graduates from North America must apply through the VMCAS application system and not through UCAS. Applicants are normally final year degree students although students with two years of pre-vet will be considered. A GPA of at least 3.4 is required. Applicants in the final year of their degree or graduates will normally be considered initially for the Graduate Accelerated BVetMed provided they have taken an appropriate Biological Sciences based degree. Applicants who are selected for interview but unsuccessful in gaining a place on the four year programme may be considered for our five year BVetMed programme. The following are prerequisite courses: Required at upper Level (8 semester credits each)
Also required (4 semester credits each)
Strongly recommended:
We do not require students to sit the GRE examinations (or any other standardised tests), nor are there any supplemental application forms to complete. For further details please go to our North American section. |

Work experience
We ask for prior work experience, both in a veterinary practice and in other animal environments, in order to develop animal handling skills and obtain an insight into the work of veterinary surgeons. Before your application, you must have completed the minimum requirements recently (i.e. within 2 years of your application):
Examples of such an environment include, but are not limited to: kennels, cattery, animal shelter, farm, stables, city farm, pet shop, lambing, wildlife park, zoo etc. You do not have to have gained experience in all these areas. |
All applicants must complete the work experience questionnaire and send it by post to the Admissions Office, Royal Veterinary College, Royal College Street, London NW1 0TU. The completed Questionnaire must be received at the College by the UCAS deadline of 15th October.. Any work experience completed prior to your first degree can also be mentioned, but you must have completed the minimum requirements above within the last two years prior to your application.
If you are interested in finding out more about work experience requirements then listen to our Work experience podcast.
Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT)
What is the BMAT?
The BMAT is a supplementary science aptitude test to help inform the selection process. It is used by a select number of universities and veterinary schools and is run by the Admissions Testing Service. The BMAT is designed to test the data handling and reasoning skills of candidates, and the ability to structure thoughts in extended writing exercises. We currently experience a huge volume of applications from Home/EU students for places on the BVetMed, therefore it is necessary to include an additional 'filter' when assessing applications and making decisions on candidates. BMAT scores are used as the final 'fllter' of the selection process to decide who is called for interview/offered a place.
To find out more about the BMAT, visit RVC BMAT Information (in the Quick Links menu).
BMAT is compulsory for all* applicants to our BVetMed courses (D100, D101, and D102).
*Except non-EU International Students.
The Royal Veterinary College is concerned that the entry fee should not be viewed as a barrier to access and widening participation. Applicants may apply to the BMAT Support Team for a reimbursement of fees if they meet the criteria outlined in the BMAT FAQs.
