Super Vets

Series Two

Episode 6

At the Royal Veterinary College, 7 month old Louis the Bichon Frise is in a critical condition. He’d been recovering in intensive care after cutting edge open heart surgery to remove an abnormal membrane from inside his heart. But just hours later, he had a massive bleed inside his chest. Now, surgeon Dan Brockman must re-open his chest and check if Louis’ heart is leaking blood. It’s a tense wait….but fortunately, Dan can’t find any problem and the bleed stops of its own accord. Louis is brought back to intensive care to recover. Within a few days, the abdominal swelling that was a side effect of his condition has disappeared and Louis’ waistline is trim again. An echocardiogram confirms his heart is working much better and his owners arrive for an emotional reunion…

At Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, Makubu the white rhino is being moved to Holland as part of a global breeding programme. So far, Makubu has never had a calf, so before she leaves Park Vet Tim Bouts wants to ultrasound her to make sure her reproductive system is working normally. There’s an added urgency as recent research seems to show that male white rhinos are able to tell if a female is not fertile and then kill her. To check what’s happening inside, Makubu must first be sedated….with an animal who weighs in at 1.8 tonnes, it’s not an easy job…

Back at the College, Blueboy the cat has come in to see vet Holger Volk. Blueboy’s been having seizures and Holger needs to find out why. An MRI scan reveals a tumour inside the front of his brain. Blueboy needs immediate brain surgery to remove the tumour…
