Super Vets

Episode 9

Titan the alpaca

Titan the alpaca cria was brought to the Royal Veterinary College when only a few days old. He had been suffering from diarrhoea caused by an unknown infection and being disinterested in food, had become extremely weak.

He was admitted into the intensive care unit usually used for new born horse foals where staff and students were able to provide him with around the clock care.

Diagnosis

Blood tests showed that his blood glucose level was low and that he had not absorbed sufficient antibodies from his Mum’s first milk to ensure that his immune system would work well.

Treatment

TitanInitially he was not allowed any food by mouth in order to combat the diarrhoea. To keep him hydrated and to provide food he was fed by drip. To try and boost his immune system he received a transfusion of blood plasma.

Titan responded well to the treatment and within a couple of days was able to take milk by mouth. He was encouraged to suckle his Mum as well as receiving additional milk from a bottle to ensure that he had sufficient nutrition to meet his needs. After 3 days of treatment he was taken off his drip.

TitanIt took another three days before the vets were sure that he was getting sufficient milk from his Mum. Titan then went home a much stronger and happier alpaca.
