When we left the show last week, Harry had just been returned to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals after his ground-breaking and, if successful, life-saving heart surgery. The first night in ICU would be critical.
Good news was waiting for Harry’s family and the operating team when they awoke the following morning, as he had recovered remarkably well overnight under the care and observation of the ICU night staff. Cardiologists examined Harry to determine whether surgery had successfully removed the obstruction in his heart. It had, and the patch sealing the hole was working too. Over the next couple of days he improved dramatically, becoming so much of a handful that he was sent home!
A few days later there was a setback, as Harry again became lethargic and his breathing laboured. Rushed back to the QMHA, staff once again found fluid accumulating in his chest cavity was causing his breathing difficulties. Under sedation the fluid was drained, and Harry quickly returned to his active lifestyle and mischievous ways. Over the following weeks Harry had regular checkups to assess the fluid in his chest.
With each check-up things looked a little better and at the time of his most recent check-up he was continuing to do very well. When we first saw Harry his heart failure was so bad that euthanasia was being considered as an option. His recovery and continued health are an enormous credit to both the hospital teams who completed this world first procedure, as well as to Harry’s courageous parents who let them take the risk.
