Virginia Luis Fuentes

Virginia is a Senior Lecturer in Internal Medicine and an American and European specialist in Cardiology. She splits her time between clinics in the Queen Mother Hospital, teaching and research.

Biography

Virginia graduated from Cambridge Veterinary School in 1984. She spent five years in practice (obtaining RCVS Certificates in Radiology and Small Animal Cardiology) before becoming a Lecturer in Veterinary Cardiology at the University of Edinburgh (obtaining the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology in 1992). She was awarded the PDSA Scholarship between 1992-1995 towards a PhD in the echocardiographic assessment of canine dilated cardiomyopathy, and gained RCVS Specialist status in Veterinary Cardiology in 1994.

Virginia moved to the University of Missouri, Columbia as an Assistant Professor in 1997, and then in 2001 became a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine until joining the Royal Veterinary College in 2004.

Research

Virginia’s interests are in echocardiography, and canine and feline myocardial disease. Her current projects are investigating endothelial function in dogs, assessment of mitral regurgitation, and the prevalence of heart disease in cats.

Teaching

Virginia is involved with final year rotational teaching when on clinics. She is also the module leader for the BVetMed 3rd year Cardiovascular module, and more recently has developed the new MVetMed Masters degree for Senior Clinical Training Scholars (residents).

Clinical

Virginia spends half of her time working in the cardiac clinic at the Queen Mother Hospital. She is interested in all aspects of cardiology, but especially mitral regurgitation and feline heart disease.
