Vicki Dale

Vicki joined the RVC in April 2007 as a LIVE Fellow in Lifelong Learning, and became a Lecturer in Veterinary Education in April 2008. In February 2011, she took on the role of Learning Development Officer and combines this role with being a Lecturer on the PGCert/PGDip/MSc Veterinary Education courses.

She is a Registered Practitioner of the Higher Education Academy (HEA Website), a founding member of Veterinary Education Worldwide (ViEW Website), a Fellow of the Centre for Excellence in Professional Placement Learning 2008-9 (CEPPL Website) and a member of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers.


Biography

Vicki graduated in 1992 with a BSc. in Archaeology from the University of Glasgow, before obtaining an MSc. in Archaeological Computing from the University of Southampton in 1994, her dissertation focusing on the development of a multimedia training package on archaeological science, where she developed a strong interest in e-learning. Between 1993-1994 she worked at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, developing a computer-aided learning package for the TLTP Archaeology consortium.

Following this, Vicki was employed in 1994 as a Courseware Designer for the Computer-aided Learning In Veterinary Education (CLIVE) consortium at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, where she worked for 13 years, supporting e-learning and research in veterinary education. In 2008, she obtained her PhD entitled “Educational methods and technologies in undergraduate veterinary medicine: A case study of veterinary teaching and learning at Glasgow, 1949-2006”, supervised by Professor Martin Sullivan and Dr. Erica McAteer.

Research

During her time at the RVC, Vicki's research has focused on self-directed learning in the undergraduate veterinary curriculum, and lifelong learning in the profession.  Research studies that she has conducted or participated in include:

  • Influencing factors on career choices in BSc Bioveterinary Science graduates
  • The application of adult learning theory (andragogy) to veterinary undergraduate education
  • Students’ perceptions of the new BVetMed curriculum with an increased emphasis on self-directed learning
  • Use of a logbook to support undergraduate veterinary students' self-directed learning in the workplace
  • Graduates' perceptions about open-book examinations in a postgraduate animal health course
  • Motivational factors and barriers to veterinary practitioners’ engagement in continuing professional development
  • Use of Web 2.0 technologies to support informal, lifelong learning in the veterinary profession (NOVICE project website)
  • Enhancing clinical learning in the workplace (ECLW project website)

 

Teaching

Vicki is involved in:

  • Teaching professional skills within the veterinary, bioveterinary and veterinary nursing courses at the RVC
  • Facilitating modules and tutoring students on the PGCert/PGDip/MSc in Veterinary Education
  • Delivering study skills workshops across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses

In addition to acting as an examiner for the BVetMed, BSc and MSc courses above, Vicki is also involved in the assessment of professional skills essays for the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (RVC CertAVP Website)
