Sonja Jeckel

Sonja joined the Royal Veterinary College in 2004 and is working as Veterinary Investigation Officer for the RVC-VLA Surveillance Centre. She is responsible for carrying out post mortem examinations on farmed species and is contributing to the National Disease Surveillance. She also teaches on several undergraduate courses.
Biography
Sonja graduated with a veterinary degree from the Justus-Liebig-Universitaet Giessen, Germany, in 1995. She worked thereafter for 2.5 years in mixed practice in Devon before carrying out a PhD equivalent in molecular virology of papillomaviruses at the Eberhard-Karls- Universitaet Tuebingen, Germany. Thereafter she worked for 1.5 years as a post-doctorate researcher at Pfizer in Sandwich, UK. In September 2004 she joined the Royal Veterinary College as Veterinary Investigation Officer for the RVC-VLA Surveillance Centre.
Research
Sonja's main research interests include farm animal diseases and in particular infectious diseases.
Teaching
Sonja is teaching individual lectures on several strands of undergraduate teaching and during the rotations. She organises and runs the farm animal diagnostic pathology elective week for final year BVetMed students.
Clinical
Sonja as part of the small RVC-VLA Surveillance Centre team (together with Rosie Pearson) is responsible for carrying out necropsies on farm animal carcases submitted by internal and external veterinary clinicians.
