Stephen Baines

Stephen is Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals. He is Head of Surgery and Programme Director for the Senior Clinical Training Scholar programme in surgery. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a European Specialist and RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery


Biography

Stephen qualified from Cambridge University in 1990. He held an internship at North Carolina State University from 1990-1991. He then spent fifteen months in general practice, before taking up a Residency in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Liverpool, where he gained the RCVS Certificates in Veterinary Radiology and Small Animal Surgery.

Stephen completed a PhD in canine tumour immunology at the University of Cambridge followed by a period as Clinical Surgeon in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery, where he gained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons . He joined the Royal Veterinary College in 2004 and is currently Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at the Royal Veterinary College.

Research

Stephen is part of the Infection and Immunity research group. His main interests include cancer biology and immunology. Particular research interests include the histiocytic proliferative diseases, immunophenotyping of canine neoplasia and modulators of proliferation and apoptosis in canine neoplasia.

Teaching

Stephen teaches on the BVetMed year 3 Principles of Clinical Science and Alimentary modules and on the BVetMed year 2 Principles strand. In addition, he acts as supervisor for year 2 and year 3 BSc Bioveterinary Science projects as well as year 4/5 BVetMed projects.

Clinical

Stephen has particular interests in oncological surgery, wound management and reconstruction and minimally-invasive surgery.
