Robert Goggs

Rob is a Staff Clinician in Emergency and Critical Care at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals.

Biography

Rob graduated with distinction from University of Liverpool in 2004. He began an internship at the QMHA, Royal Veterinary College in July 2004 and developed an interest in Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) whilst an intern. In July 2008 he completed a three year residency in Emergency and Critical Care and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in November 2008.

Research

Rob’s research interests currently include coagulation abnormalities in dogs with immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA); he is currently undertaking a prospective observational study using thromboelastography (TEG) to investigate the coagulation abnormalities in patients with IMHA. It is hoped that this information will allow future prospective interventional studies to be planned. Rob hopes to use computed tomography (CT) pulmonary angiography to investigate pulmonary thormboembolism in IMHA patients.

Intra-abdominal pressure and abdominal compartment syndrome; he is currently undertaking a cross-section observational study of the prevalence of intra-abdominal hypertension in critically ill dogs.

Heart rate variability in critically ill patients. Rob is trying to determine if this non-invasive technique will allow better identification of high risk ICU patients.

Teaching

Rob now spends much of his time teaching interns and residents all aspects of ECC, which he thoroughly enjoys. He also teaches BVetMed undergraduates the principles of ECC medicine. Particular interests include fluid therapy and coagulation abnormalities.

Clinical

Rob enjoys all aspects of ECC, in particular fluid therapy and electrolyte disturbances, coagulopathies and provision of mechanical ventilation.
