Pilar Lafuente

Pilar is a Lecturer in Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery, and an American and European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. She is involved in clinical work, teaching and research. Her interests include bone lengthening, external fixation and stifle disease.
Biography
Pilar graduated from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 1998. After a rotating internship at the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain, she conducted a PhD investigating bone lengthening in dogs at the same University. In 2004 she moved to Gainesville (Florida) to complete an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Florida. One year later she started a residency in Small Animal Surgery at Washington State University and she became a diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons in 2009.
In 2009 Pilar became a Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery (orthopaedics) at the Royal Veterinary College.
Research
Pilar has conducted research in the area of bone lengthening, and small animal orthopaedics such as external fixators and supraspinatus tendinopathy.
Teaching
Pilar´s teaching functions include lectures and laboratories in the musculoskeletal module of the BVetMed, and clinical teaching and training of final year veterinary students, interns and surgery residents at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA). Pilar is also involved in the provision of small animal orthopaedics related CPD courses for veterinary surgeons.
Clinical
Pilar is a member of the Small Animal Orthopaedic team at the Royal Veterinary College. She is involved with the diagnosis and treatment of a multiple musculo-skeletal conditions, ranging from acute trauma and fractures to elective surgery.
