Nigel Goode

Nigel is a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Basic Sciences. Nigel is interested in the theory of education and is currently researching what criteria predict success of students applying to the BVetMed course.

Biography

Nigel graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from Melbourne University, Australia, in 1982. After working for a year in dairy practice and a couple of years in small animal practice in Australia, Nigel joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, now Cancer Research UK. Whilst there he completed a PhD in cell cycle control, which at the time was cutting edge research.

Following his PhD, Nigel moved on to undertake a 4 year Post-doc on Protein Kinase C before joining the Royal Veterinary College as a lecturer in 1993. Nigel is now a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Basic Sciences and Teaching Coordinator for Veterinary Basic Sciences.

Research

Although Nigel doesn’t get much time for research anymore, he remains interested in cell signalling in its broadest aspects. In particular he enjoys making sense of complexity in science.

Nigel is also interested in the theory of education. As an admissions tutor for the BVetMed course he is researching selection criteria, trying to determine what criteria predict success.

Teaching

Nigel’s key role is Teaching Coordinator for Veterinary Basic Sciences, responsible for organising courses and ensuring their delivery. This role involves driving forwards teaching in terms of new methods and techniques. A particular challenge is engendering student engagement. Nigel has been involved in developing the new BVetMed curriculum. One of his aims for the new curriculum was to decrease the amount of teaching and provide students with more freedom in learning, similar to the structure of the BSc Bioveterinary Sciences course.

Nigel is also BVetMed Year 1 Course Leader and Alimentary Strand Leader for BVetMed.
