Ken Smith

Ken is Professor of Companion Animal Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College. His research interests include infectious diseases in horses and neoplasia in small animals.
Biography
Ken qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 1988 and undertook a residency in equine pathology at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. He then undertook PhD studies on the pathogenesis of equine herpesviral infections in a joint project between the Animal Health Trust and Royal Veterinary College before returning to the Animal Health Trust as staff pathologist in 1994. He became Head of Pathology at the Animal Health Trust in 2001 and moved to his current post as Professor of Companion Animal Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College in 2006.
Research
Ken's abiding research interest is the pathogenesis of infectious diseases in horses. He also has long-standing interests in neoplasia in dogs and cats and has developed new areas of interest including canine portocaval shunt regeneration and the pathogenesis of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia.
Teaching
Ken teaches on multiple courses at the College, including the BVetMed, BSc in bioveterinary science and intercalated BSc in veterinary pathology. He is currently strand leader for urogenital teaching in the new BVetMed curriculum and chair of the BVetMed year 3 examinations board.
Clinical
Ken participates in the clinical diagnostic service of the RVC (post mortem and biopsy work), is involved in training the senior clnical training scholars in anatomic and clinical pathology and has a wide range of publications in collaboration with clinical colleagues within and outwith the RVC.

Outreach Activities
Ken chaired the Speciality Advisory Committee (SAC) on Veterinary Pathology of the Royal College of Pathologists from 2008-2010 and currently sits on the SAC as Senior Vice Chair. The SAC's role is to advise the Royal College of Pathologists on matters relating to veterinary pathology in the United Kingdom and overseas. Ken also sits on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Comparative Pathology and the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.
