Jen is a PhD student in the Centre for Animal Welfare researching the development of attitudes to and acquisition of knowledge on farm animal welfare.
Biography
Jen graduated in 2006 from Bristol University with a BSc in Zoology. Following a year working on predator research in South Africa she then went on to complete an MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Edinburgh. She started her PhD at the Royal Veterinary College in 2008.
Research
Jen’s research centres around exploring the development of attitudes to and acquisition of knowledge on animal welfare. Her primary focus is looking at attitudes and knowledge of farm animal welfare with specific respect to educating secondary school children. With the involvement of the foremost animal welfare charity the RSPCA, the Institute of Education and the RVC’s Centre for Animal Welfare, LIVE Centre and Widening Participation Office, her project draws together expertise in animal welfare, research and primary to tertiary education to tackle this issue.
Current research includes development of both assessment tools to explore the efficacy of an RSPCA educational resource, and a tool to characterize information on animal welfare.

Outreach Activities
Jen is also involved in outreach activities, particularly engaging school children in animal welfare. Recent activities include assisting in the running and evaluation of an RVC event on chicken biology and welfare and food labelling (Inside Chicken Run). Jen and her supervisor Dr Siobhan Abeyesinghe were runners up in the national BBSRC Social Innovator of the Year 2011 competition for this work.
