Research

My current research is funded by a BBSRC grant awarded to a consortium of university research groups in the South East of England.  This large project aims to develop new diagnostic methods and potential vaccine candidates for several bacterial pathogens that are responsible for respiratory disease in pigs.

The primary focus of my work at the RVC is the bacterium Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the cause of enzootic pneumonia in pigs.  I am currently working in the laboratory of Professor Andrew Rycroft, developing a transposon-mediated method of mutagenesis to help us to identify virulence factors associated wtih M.hyopneumoniae.  In addition to improving our understanding of M.hyopneumoniae pathogenesis, it is anticipated that our studies will allow the identification of potential vaccine candidates.

Clinical

Although my role at the RVC does not include clinical work, I continue to work part-time as a locum veterinary surgeon in small animals practices in Hertfordshire.  I have worked as a regular locum at Letchworth Veterinary Centre since 2006.
