Gareth Arthurs

Gareth is a Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics). Most of his time is spent doing clinical work but he is also involved in teaching, providing Continual Professional Development and research.


Biography

Gareth graduated from Cambridge University in 1996. He initially spent 4 years in general practice during which time he gained the RCVS CertVR. He then spent 3 years in small animal practice as a first opinion clinician and a referral surgeon with a bias towards orthopaedics during which time he gained the RCVS CertSAS. Since 2003, he has worked purely as a referral small animal orthopaedic surgeon.

In 2004, Gareth returned to Cambridge University to study for the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) which he achieved in 2007. Gareth is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics).

Teaching

Gareth teaches all aspects of small animal orthopaedics to undergraduate and post-graduate students including being closely involved with the teaching and supervision of final year veterinary students and Junior and Senior Clinical Training Scholars. Gareth is also involved in the provision of small animal orthopaedics related CPD courses for veterinary surgeons.

Clinical

Gareth's clinical interests are: (1) Bone healing, the understanding, management and intervention of, and its application to fracture management. (2) The surgical management of patellar luxation. (3) Minimally invasive surgery, including fracture repair and arthroscopy. (4) Total Joint Replacement. Gareth aims to develop a comprehensive Total Hip Replacement service at the Royal Veterinary College.
