Brian Summers

Brian is the Professor of Comparative Neuropathology at the Royal Veterinary College. His textbook of Veterinary Neuropathology was written with Professors John Cummings and Alexander de Lahunta.  In addition, he has published over 140 papers.


Biography

Brian graduated from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 1969. He spent 18 months as a State Government Veterinarian and a small-animal locum. He completed a Masters degree in Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College in 1972, then returned to Australia and worked for the State Government Veterinary Service for a further three and a half years. In 1976 he moved to Cornell University, New York for graduate studies and in 1980 was appointed Assistant Professor of Pathology.

He became Professor of Pathology in 1995, director of residency training and head of the surgical pathology service at Cornell. He spent a sabbatical year at Cambridge (1987-88) with Dr. Tony Palmer and Professor Bill Blakemore. After 30 years, he left Cornell in 2006 for the Royal Veterinary College . He is a Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

Research

Brian has participated in studies of canine distemper, hip dysplasia, Lyme disease and equine motor neuron disease.

Teaching

Brian focuses on teaching residents in pathology and neurology.

Clinical

Brian’s key clinical interests revolve around neurologic disease - comparative neurology and neuropathology. As a diagnostic pathologist, he also has a strong interest in surgical pathology and has published on a variety of neoplastic disorders.
